MERCY RULES IN EFFECT
At their meeting last May, the Board of Directors adopted criteria for a mercy rules in football, hockey, and basketball beginning with this 2006-07 season. The main purpose is to encourage coaches to manage their teams in such a way as to promote good sportsmanship by substituting early when in a situation where one team is clearly superior to another.

Football:
" A running clock will be utilized when there is a point spread of 35 points or more at the end of the third quarter or thereafter. Once begun, the running clock will be stopped only for team, official, or injury time outs, and after each score."

Hockey:
" A running clock will be utilized when there is a point spread of 10 goals or more at the end of the second period or thereafter. Once begun, the running clock will be stopped only for team, official, or injury time outs, and after each score."

Basketball:
" A running clock will be utilized when there is a point spread of 40 points or more at the end of the third quarter or thereafter. Once begun, the running clock will be stopped only for team, official, or injury time outs, and during technical fouls."

OFFICIALS CERTIFICATION
Officials Certification is only for one School Year and all certifications expire at the end of each school year. It is important and in the best interest of all interested officials to become certified as soon as possible each year.

To complete the certification process one may submit the online application (at the top of this page) or fax or mail the application and the appropriate certification fees to ASAA. The test and answer sheet as well as appropriate rule book will then be sent to the applicant to certify and return to ASAA for scoring. If passed (75 or higher) a copy of the answer sheet and Certification Card will be mailed. NOTE: Tests are not released prior to the NFHS release date.

For new officials contact your local association or ASAA and an application will be mailed to you.

In order to be CONSIDERED for STATE TOURNAMENTS Officials MUST be certified by the beginning of the fourth week of the applicable season. (i.e. Four weeks from the listed date of the first practice on the ASAA Calendar).
