MERCY RULES IN EFFECT
At their meeting in May 2006, the Board of Directors adopted criteria for a mercy rules in football, hockey, and basketball beginning with this 2006-07 season. The main purpose is to encourage coaches to manage their teams in such a way as to promote good sportsmanship by substituting early when in a situation where one team is clearly superior to another.

Football:
”A running clock will be utilized when there is a point spread of 35 points or more at the end of the third quarter or thereafter. Once begun, the running clock will be stopped only for team, official, or injury time outs, and after each score.”

Hockey:
”A running clock will be utilized when there is a point spread of 10 goals or more at the end of the second period or thereafter. Once begun, the running clock will be stopped only for team, official, or injury time outs, and after each score.”

Basketball:
”A running clock will be utilized when there is a point spread of 40 points or more at the end of the third quarter or thereafter. Once begun, the running clock will be stopped only for team, official, or injury time outs, and during technical fouls.”
