WOLVERINES RULE NORDIC SKI
The South Anchorage Wolverines girls team won the State Nordic Ski Championship for the first time in school history, while the boys team pulled a three-peat. Scott Patterson of South became only the second high school boy to win the Skimeister Award three times (the other being Eric Strabel of Colony) and Hannah Boyer of West Valley claimed the girls Skimeister title.
NEW STATE TOURNAMENT SITES ANNOUNCED
The ASAA Board of Directors voted to hold the 2010 State Cross Country Championships on the Bartlett Trails in Anchorage. This is the first time since 1993 that this event has been held in Anchorage. Other new sites include the 2010 4A Wrestling Championships to be held for the first time at Curtis Menard Sports Complex (hosted by Colony) while the 123A Wrestling Championships will be held at Nikiski High School for the next three years. The State Hockey Championships will stay at the Curtis Menard Sports Complex in Wasilla through 2013.
WEST ANCHORAGE AND HUTCHISON HOIST CUPS FOR FIRST TIME
Exciting games were the rule at the First National Cup State Hockey Championships in Wasilla. East High was involved in three of the four overtime games as they tied for third place while the West High Eagles shut out Dimond for their first ever hockey championship. Hutchison duplicated the fete for the small schools by beating Tri-Valley. See Scores and Awards.
ASAA LOOKING FOR MARCH MADNESS VOLUNTEERS
March Madness Alaska invites 64 teams in 4 classifications to the Sullivan Arena during the week of March 15-20, 2010 to participate in the largest basketball tournament in the nation. ASAA is looking for volunteers who have a love of basketball and want to fill a number of positions. Please fill out the following application form if you are interested.
NEW SOLUTION FOR FILLING YOUR SPORTS SCHEDULE
ASAA has provided an online link for athletic administrators to use to fill their activity schedules. Just click on this link and enter the username and password given to you.
BOARD ADOPTS 2010-11 SEASON CALENDAR (view here)
Planning for next year’s schedule of events has begun. A list of tournaments/invitationals around the state for 2010-11 is being developed and updated daily for the convenience of athletic administrators.
2010 MASTER FOOTBALL SCHEDULE
The Football Committee has released the 2010 master schedule for all Alaskan Varsity Football teams. Schools are encouraged to sign contracts with each school they are scheduled to play.
CURTIS MENARD SPORTS COMPLEX NEW VOLLEYBALL STATE SITE
The Board of Directors voted to award the 3A/4A State Volleyball Championships for 2010-11-12 to Palmer High School. Palmer will host it at the Curtis Menard Sports Complex in Wasilla. The State Hockey Championships have been held there for the past three years. Dimond High School won the bid to continue to host the 1A/2A and Mixed Six Volleyball State Championships for the next three years.
NOMINATIONS FOR STATE OFFICIALS
ASAA is requesting your help in nominating current certified officials for the State Championships. Fill out this ballot no later than February 15 for State Basketball.
COLONY WINS FOURTH STRAIGHT WRESTLING TITLE
The Colony Knights won a record-tying fourth straight championship at the 4A Wrestling Tournament at Chugiak. Dillingham won for the third time in five years at the 1A-2A-3A Wrestling Championships held recently at Bartlett High. View results and awards.
KLAWOCK WINS FIRST VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
After finishing second last year, Klawock swept through the competition at the 1A/2A Volleyball Championships to win their first title. Tikigak repeated as the Mixed-Six Champion and extended their success at state to four titles out of the last five years. View results and awards.
ALL-STATE MUSIC FESTIVAL A SUCCESS
The best high school musicians in the state of Alaska performed at the West Anchorage Auditorium on Saturday November 21. Check the First Chair Awards that were presented. Photos of them and the rehearsals for All-State Band, Orchestra, Mixed and Treble Choir can be viewed and purchased at this Lifetouch link.
AD HOC COMMITTEES FORMED
The Classification Committee and Calendar Committee have both had their first meetings and shared their thoughts with the Board of Directors. Representatives on the Board will now seek input from their regions. View members of those committees and dates of meetings.
STATE TOURNAMENT SITES
There are numerous state tournaments that will be up for bid in 2009-10 (view here). The deadline for Hockey, Wrestling, and Cross Country Running will be Feb.10 and Track and Soccer will be due in April. Bid documents are listed under those sports.
STATE PARTICIPATION FEE
The Board of Directors voted to add a participation fee for each state tournament to help offset ASAA expenses. Schools are invoiced for the total number of participants following each state event. See memo from Executive Director
MEDIA PASS REQUEST
Authorized media personnel/agencies may request passes to the state tournaments by filling out this online form.
STATE 3A/4A VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONS REPEAT
The Anchorage Christian Lions roared through the tournament without losing a single game and defeated Monroe Catholic in the final to win their second straight volleyball championship. Dimond High School followed suit with a convincing victory over Colony to repeat as champions. TRAVELING THROUGH CANADA
School teams traveling through Canada need to have approved travel documents. Be sure to read this notice in order to avoid unnecessary delays.
STATE SWIMMING & DIVING RESULTS
The Service Cougar women and the Dimond Lynx men swam and dove to victories at the State Championships. East High’s Sam Wicks and Dimond’s Matt Summers were voted Outstanding Swimmers while East’s Renee Jordan and Kodiak’s Scott Wandersee captured the Outstanding Diving honors for the second year in a row. FIRST NATIONAL BOWL CHAMPIONS
The Kenai Kardinals handed the three-time defending champion Soldotna Stars their first loss in 37 small schools opponents with a 21-10 victory to reclaim the Small Schools Championship. The Bartlett Golden Bears completed a remarkable season by defeating Chugiak 21-3 in the Large Schools Championship. See results and awards here.
