Our Staff
GARY MATTHEWS – Executive Director
Gary is in charge of ASAA’s overall operations, personnel management, strategic and budget planning, and corporate sponsor relations. He is also responsible for student eligibility and waiver determination and serves as Alaska’s representative on the National Federation Council. His duties also involve monitoring the directives from the Board of Directors as well as preparing the agenda for each board meeting. Gary also is the main contact for the Alaska High School Hall of Fame and the Alaska Endowment for Youth Activities Program as well as the Play for Keeps Program initiated statewide in 2008.
DR. TERESA JOHNSON – Director of Student Services
Teresa is responsible for overseeing the Eligibility Reporting System (ERS) and the Play for Keeps (PFK) programs. She works directly with the technology contractors to monitor the system, create reports and make recommendations for curriculum. Teresa is responsible to write and administer grants awarded to ASAA for program development and program implementation. Teresa completes all reporting requirements related to grant and other funding agencies. She also serves as a liaison between ASAA and other state agencies to provide coordination of efforts where possible.
ISAIAH VREEMAN – Director of Special Events / Website Content Manager
Isaiah is in charge of all state championship event coordination and management. His work involves planning and meeting with host personnel, developing schedules, setting pay scales, budgets, ordering and inventory of championship memorabilia, awards, and oversees the production of state souvenir programs. He also maintains a current list of state records and historical data for all sporting events. In addition, he manages parts of the ASAA website by updating news, announcements, sports and activities information on their respective pages. Isaiah also provides communication to all media sources as well as sending out bimonthly email newsletters to all athletic administrators, activities principals, and coaches.
LAVONNE NORMAN – Director of Office Operations / Marketing
Lavonne directs daily office operations and supervises administrative assistants. She is the secretary for each of the ASAA Board of Directors meetings and is charged with maintaining the minutes. She also is the main contact for all marketing initiatives. She works closely with ASAA sponsors to match their interests with the needs of ASAA. Lavonne is the NFHS State Spirit Team Director and coordinates statewide spirit programs and the State Cheerleading adjudication held each year during March Madness. She is also the contact for the National Federation Coaches Certification Program and overseas that program in Alaska.
RUS SCHRECKENGHOST – Associate Director
Rus is responsible for coordinating the Officials certification procedures, maintaining a current list of all certified Officials, and selecting Officials for the State Championships. His duties also include recording all ejection notices. In addition, he is tasked with various Coaching areas, such as certification extensions, coordination of skills clinics, and NFHS initiatives directly affecting Coaches. He is the contact for the National Federation Coaches Certification Program and oversees that program in Alaska. Rus also assists with the planning and on-site management of the State Tournament. He records, tabulates, and maintains the WPI seeding procedure for 3A-4A Basketball.
BRAD POTTER – Director of Technology
Brad plays a key role in various decision-making capacities related to ASAA’s technology vision, information technology (IT) management and website development. He also provides technical assistance and staff training for all of ASAA’s hardware, software, mobile communication and network needs.
DEANNA MONTAGNA – Administrative Assistant
Deanna is the secondary receptionist, she shares the front office duties, answering phones, mailing, filing, copying, pass orders, monitoring master eligibility lists for all activities.
CAM BOHMAN – Fine Arts Coordinator
Cam is the coordinator for the All-State Honor Music Festival held annually in November, as well as the Solo and Ensemble adjudication that occurs each Spring. Her efforts include selection of clinicians and adjudicators; reception and distribution of audition tapes; planning and coordination of each day’s activities as well as the command performances.
KEVIN HOLT – Contract Graphic Designer
Kevin is primarily responsible for layout and design of each state event souvenir program. His expertise is also called upon to prepare full size promotional posters for each event, production of the ASAA handbook, as well as other publications (ie. Music and DDF handbooks) and certificates as needed throughout the year.
CAROL WATERS – Contract Student Government Director
Carol coordinates all the student government business including the fall and spring AASG Conferences. She also schedules and attends many AASG executive meetings and monitors their budget.
